Infant Car Seats - What You Should Know Before Buying Your First Car Seat

Friday, August 27th, 2010

For a new parent or grandparent, buying a portable car seat may seem a bit complicated at first. The correct model of car seat is extremely important in keeping your baby or toddler safe while traveling in the car. If you are looking to buy a car seat for your infant, here are some important things you need to know before making your purchase.

First, you will need an infant car seat for baby’s first car ride, which will most likely be the trip home from the hospital, so don’t forget to plan ahead. Your baby’s first car seat should be a rear facing model.. In case of an impact or car accident, the rear facing seat provides the best protection, especially since your baby is unable to support the weight of their own head .. A rear facing seat, combined with a reclined front seat, creates a cozy, safe nook for baby.

When shopping, look for a design that is sturdy, but light and easy to carry. Since your baby will sleep a lot, especially when riding in the car, you’ll also want to select a model which is easily detachable. Instead of having to wake the baby up when you arrive at home, you can simply carry the baby in the car seat into your house.

You must change to a forward facing car seat when your baby weighs 20 pounds or the top of their head is near the top of the car seat. A forward facing seat is more upright and the higher end models adjust to allow toddlers a more horizontal position which means a more comfortable sleeping position during those long drives.

Do keep in mind your toddler must be able to sit up by themselves before they can use a forward facing car seat. The forward facing seats are built and designed for longer term use and you should be able to use this style seat until your child is four to six years old.

A toddler will usually use a portable car seat until they are forty pounds or when the tops of their ears are just about inline with the top of the car seat. Once your child weight 40 pounds, it is time to move him to a booster seat which is secured with a seat belt.

A big question some new parents ask is should they purchase or use a second hand seat? This can be a difficult question to answer. A portable car seat helps prevent serious injuries in case of a car accident, so you want to find out if the seat has even been in an accident. If so, the frame not be properly aligned, which comprises the strength of the car seat and the safety of your child.

If you do decide to purchase a second hand car seat, it’s best to accept a use car seat from someone you trust. You must find out if the car seat has been in any type of accident, because it may be damaged and compromise the safety of your baby. Also, take a few minutes and inspect the padding, belts and fasteners. It is very important that all of these items are in good condition. And last but not least, if the owner’s manual is not available, check for a label on the car seat itself. This will have details about the correct use of the car seat.

Remember, if the passenger side of your car has an airbag, the car seat should go in the back seat, not the front seat of the car. In the event of a car accident, if the car seat in the front passenger seat the inflating airbag may cause very serious injuries to your baby. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to insure the correct installation of the seat.

When deciding which baby car seat to purchase, read safety reviews, talk with other parents and research all of your portable car seat options. Whichever infant car seat you decide to purchase, taking the time to do a little research will make your choice much easier and you will know the best car seat for your baby.

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

There are so many choices when you are having a baby. It is the most exciting time of your life and with so many choices, things can get a little confusing. Baby products seem to dominate the market so it is no surprise when a new parent gets confused between the necessities and just fluff that the baby really does not need. There are some important items that no baby should be without however.

One of the first things you might begin looking for is a crib and other furniture for your baby’s room. There are as many styles of cribs as there are couches for your home, so you have plenty of choices. You can get anything from metal to pine to cherry baby furniture. The biggest constriction is how much you want to pay for it. Something made of cherry wood may run you quite a bit, but it ill also last you quite a while. And it is suitable for both girls and boys.

After you pick out the crib, the next thing would naturally be bedding for your baby’s crib. Baby girl and baby boy bedding can come in all sorts of designs and some places can even special make them to match your style. With so many styles on the market, you can surely find something to suit your taste.

If you have not already chosen a theme for your baby’s room, the possibilities here are also endless. You can choose to go with traditional baby style themes or something more to match your home decor. If you decide to go to a specialty baby store, you will be overwhelmed with the possibilities for decor choices. But you can find just about any accessory to help get your baby’s nursery ready.

One accessory no parent should go without is a good baby monitor such as the Summer Baby Monitor. They are available in the traditional sound only version, but they also offer a video monitor as well. This really helps for parents who are quite busy at home or who work from home. You can always have a visual eye on your baby.

You will also need an infant car seat. In fact, you will not be allowed to leave the hospital without one. Car seats come in all sizes so it is important to choose one that fits your baby. A newborn car seat should always face the rear of the car and should also always be placed in the back seat.

There are some car seat companies that design seats that grow with your child. While a little on the expensive side, these can be a great investment. There will no longer be a need to purchase multiple seats as your child grows out of them. In fact, you will not need one until your child turns three and needs a booster seat. But some companies are even including the booster seat as well.

A to Z Baby Care for a Healthy, Safe, and Smart Child

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Becoming a new parent is one of the greatest joys in life.  As parents, we want to feed them the most nutritious foods, mind-developing activities, and safety. This is the reason why it is crucial to be aware of the three ways by which to improve our baby’s well-being in these areas. There are particular products and parenting best practices that can help. With the assistance of  learning toys, a Cuisinart food processor, and an outstanding car seat, our little ones will grow up to be well-adjusted and healthy people.

What to Look for in a Car Seat

The National Transportation and Safety Administration reports that car accidents are the main reason for childhood deaths for children aged two to fourteen. Many of these deaths can be avoided with the proper use and installation of a car seat.  Pick out a rear-facing seat that fits your infant up to 20 or 40 pounds and then take the seat to your firehouse so a fireman can teach you how to properly install it in your vehicle.  Over 90% of all baby vehicle carriers are installed inadequately, which can lead to severe injuries or even death, so take the time to learn how to install it properly! Then, you’ll need a booster seat, which is the last type of Britax car seat that you’ll need until your child can use just the seat belt.

A Food Processor is the First Step to a Healthier Baby

The American Pediatric Association recommends that babies are fed plenty of pureed produce to develop properly. Sure, buying prepared baby food is easy, but it can be costly. However, in today’s economy, preparing your own baby food with a Cuisinart food processor is a great way to work with a limited budget while serving your baby foods that are full of nutrients. Choose organic fruits and veggies whenever available and search for offers on these items in your weekly food sales ads.  By purchasing organic foods, your baby will be taking in food that has absolutely no harmful pesticides. Several organic food agencies report that over time, exposure to pesticides in our food can develop into cancer.

Educational Toys Help Build Your Baby’s Intelligence

Well-chosen kids learning toys will provide your baby’s mind with what it needs to properly develop.  Black and white colors are ideal for infants in the beginning phases of childhood (about 4-8 weeks of age).  Squiggly lines, straight lines, and circles are all marks  for baby to observe and enhance their brain development . Coincidentally, science has shown that mobiles such as these actually enhance a baby’s brain development by increasing brain waves. For babies in the age range of 8 to 20 weeks, colors are now visible and they desire interactivity. Soft story books with large images, chunky wooden puzzles, and toys such as plastic doughnut rings that can stack on a central pole are all perfect types of baby educational toys.

By invigorating your child’s mental development with good educational toys, feeding them homemade food, and properly installing a Britax car seat, you’ll be giving them the very best care to get them started in life.
